Red Deer Lake

I had forgotten how beautiful the area up the Middle St Vrain is. Starting out from Peaceful Valley you can follow the north side of the river for 4 miles to the Indian Peaks Wilderness Boundary. Plenty of perfect pools for fishing, a few cascades along the way, cool and shady and fresh in the early morning.

A few more miles brought us to Red Dear Lake. Unlike most of the lakes that are nestled in between towering peaks, the peaks are all in the distance here and the views are spectacular. The glaciers that carved out this valley must have been enormous.

Along the way there are plenty of large meadows. We kept wondering what had formed the area - logging camps, fires?  A railroad line had been planned for this pass once upon a time. Old timber still lines the trail in places.
